A kitchen renovation is one of the most expensive projects you can do in your home, but if done properly it can increase your home’s value while providing better comfort and functionality. What are some ways to keep the costs down on your kitchen renovation?
What Do You Really Need?
Before you redo your kitchen, it’s best to have a very clear idea of exactly what you want. If the entire layout of the kitchen is totally wrong for you, then you’ll have to pay a lot more, especially if the work involves re-routing plumbing or electrical. If the basic structure is adequate, you’ll be better able to keep costs from spiralling out of control.
Refurbish Instead Of Replace
Can you refurbish the cabinets, or refinish the hardwood floors?
Perhaps the cabinets that look so outdated could be given new life with a fresh coat of paint and new handles. It’s also possible to replace the doors and drawer fronts without completely replacing the entire unit.

Depending on what you have for counters, there are affordable options that can totally revitalize your kitchen’s look. Granite and cultured stone are expensive materials, but there are cheaper options. Modern laminate can be made to look very close to stone and other kinds of natural surfaces.
Keep in mind that laminate isn't as durable. Butcher block counter tops are another cheaper option but they must be sealed to protect from liquids and are easily dented.
Islands In The Stream
If you have sufficient floor space, installing an island in the middle of the kitchen will not only increase counter space, but give you lots more storage room as well. It doesn’t have to be big to make a massive difference in how your kitchen looks and works.
Be Hands-On
The more you can do yourself the more you’ll save, not only on kitchen projects, but any home improvements. The simpler the changes you have in mind, the easier it’ll be to do on your own. This is the biggest cost-saving measure you can make.
Note that good tradespeople will likely charge more and may be booked up. Before doing any wiring or plumbing on your own, be familiar with building codes as well as local permitting and inspection requirements.
